Olympic Trials
ALA and Chicagoland JOAD alumni Stephanie Miller competed at the first nomination shoot of the 2008 Olympic Trials held in Conyers, GA from September 27-30, 2007. The field of 38 women was cut to the top 16 after the first day. The next two days consisted of 15 round robin matches among the top 16 competitors in the men's and women's division. Stephanie finished in 12th place overall. After graduating from Columbia University in New York in May of 2007, Stephanie was finally able to focus on training full-time, putting in 44 hours a week to catch up with her competition, most of whom are full-time athletes. She will continue to train with her coach Ron McCormick and will compete in the second nomination shoot in April, 2008 as a member of the 2008 Olympic Trials Shadow Team, where the field will be cut to the top 8. Bowfishing Anyone?
The following information was provided by Ed Devries of the Bowfishing Association of Illinois.
The Bowfishing Assoc. of Illinois has been around since early 05. We are a 100% free club supported by fund raisers and member donations when needed. We keep it free for one reason, get more people interested in trying bowfishing and supporting it. That is our main objective. Getting more Illinois sportsmen involved in the sport. We participate in several youth events a year including the US Sportsmans Alliance Trailblazer program, NWTF Jakes days, the Northern Ill. Conservation Clubs youth event and two of our own events done with the Illinois and Indiana DNRs. We also run a large bowfishing range at the Northern Illinois Hunting and Fishing Days event. That one is getting bigger every year. At most of the events we set up a on the water bowfishing range where participants can shoot actual bowfishing equipment and learn about the sport . At our youth events we shoot at a range and then actually take the kids out on the boats looking for fish. We also do numerous seminars and bowfishing workshops in all the Bass Pro stores and several Gander mountain stores. We have several tournaments every year, mostly in the N. Illinois area but we also do one at Shelbyville and N/W Indiana. Most of these are done at places where guys with boats or those bowfishing from shore can participate. They are always a lot of fun with lots of door prizes given at each....and food! Last years State Championship was at Henry on the Ill. River. Innerloc broadhead co. gave us $500 for the person who shot the biggest fish with their points. We also had a huge door prize list worth over $2000, including 2 bows, lots of points arrows reels and anything you could imagine. This years shoots will be at Grass LakeIllinois RiverKankakee RiverLasalle F&W area [indy]Fish Lake [indy]Shelbyvilleand lots of other fun get together shoots all over. Like I said, we want to get others out bowfishing so we will always try and get interested people out on the water to try it. Most of us have extra equipment to let people use if they are not set up. So to all your members, feel free to contact us. We have a good website at www.illinoisbowfishing.com. We also use the Bowfishing forum at www.chicagolandfishing.com as our message board and club news forum. I can be contacted at ed.devries@sbcglobal.net or call [630]327-2805
